Skype Ads Concepts

Goals Here my goal was to determine if there was a non intrusive user experience model and visual treatment to advertise on Skype. This project included a series of visual concepts that I designed for the Skype team. We wanted to test the appetite for Skype Ads in relation to Brands and Personalities that gain traction from being Ads.

My Role I was the main designer responsible for the Concepts and Visual Design execution. I very often reviewed my designs with the Skype team in a cross-team effort to deliver a consistent experience and to leverage existing design patterns and data points.

Challenge Create a UI where the Elite Brands and Personalities are perceived native in the Skype Interface, inviting the user to interact with them. One of the main challenges was to work with a remote team located in a different time zone.

Outcome I designed different early concepts leveraging the existing Skype brand colors and Skype UI components. I created new UI components based on Skype visual language and interaction patterns.

Users Scenario Consumer: Silvia
Silvia is a massive Real Madrid fan and has followed them since birth. Each morning, whilst she eats breakfast, she goes online toMarca.com to find out the latest news from the team which tells her everything that happened the previous day – she gets updated about last night’s results, injuries and any team gossip. Whilst she’s eating, she gets a ping from Skype – ‘Real Madrid Official’ has sent out their morning update. Silvia drops everything, clicks on the Skype push notification and opens her Real Madrid Official chat. She has a number of messages directly from her favourite team, a quick synopsis of last night’s match, some exclusive photos of the man of the match (Gareth Bale) and an exclusive Skype Video message of the team celebrating in the changing room post match. Silvia watches the video message content, then saves it with the Bale photo to her device ready for sharing on social media later. Silvia’s favorite player is captain Iker Casillas and she wants to add a match photo of him too, so she IMs the Skype chat with #Casillas and in an instant, up pops a photo of her goalkeeping hero, Silvia saves it to her device, selects all the Real Madrid content, uploads to her Facebook and makes her way to university.

User Scenario Advertiser: Real Madrid
Real Madrid official is the world’s most valuable football club and the club with the second highest social media following in the sport with 75m fans. They have social profiles in all of the major consumer brands – including skype. Each morning, the social media team collate excusive content for their Skype channel – a contact in Skype – that’s connected to over 15m fans worldwide. The team collate text, imagery and video content from the previous night’s match and add it to the API tool that enables them to instantly message their 15m Skype fans. Last night’s match against big rivals Barcelona has increased their fan base by 500k – all those contacts were automatically added to the contact segment and received the auto-triggered welcome message and then the updates from  the previous night.
